Getting human about Wanting to be Liked
Issue 2 | March 6, 2025
Let’s just get into it. We all want to be liked. Even if it’s not by everybody, the idea of having someone think your cool, or smart, or acceptable can feel like the most important thing. It can makes things easier. Work run smoother. It can make us feel like we are wanted, like what we are doing in this life makes sense. I don’t necessarily think this is always a bad thing, but when it gets in the way of us liking ourselves, the pressure for outward validation doesn’t feel worth it.
I work in entertainment, in a line of work where my personality and how well I’m received actually impacts my livelihood. It’s trippy and sometimes feels unfair. In those moments, I turn to the people who have been rooting for me, the ones who offer feedback because they care, not just because they can and I remind myself that I’m doing what works for me. And that the right people—the ones who truly connect with what I create—will always come.
And sometimes it’s as simple as big upping yourself every chance you get. Can you name 3 things that you think are dope about you? Do it now. Write it down. Honestly, if you can — do it again tomorrow too.
